The Daily Beast: “Stand your ground” laws are direct effects of toxic masculinity

First and foremost, the tragic death of Trayvon Martin and subsequent miscarriage of justice in the trial of his killer should make a honest discussion about race in this country a dire necessity. However, we must also realize that so-called “stand your ground” laws– like the one that allowed George Zimmerman to shoot and kill an unarmed teenager and get away and get away scot-free– are direct results of toxic masculinity gone haywire. Legislation against these laws– as well as gun control– are obviously important steps; but so is changing attitudes about gender in a hyper-aggressive, violent, stand-your-ground culture.
